I'm not a perfect boyfriend

I recently heard a friend having a very hard time at the beach explaining to his partner why he turned his head to admire the contents of a passing bikini. Amazingly, he managed to argue his case, although I'm not convinced he was fully forgiven. The incident inspired this poem.

[EDIT: Oh no, where's the poem? It's not here because I'm trying to get it published! Sorry!]

Break before Orange

Here's a random poem I found knocking around on my hard drive. Interpretations are welcome because I have no idea what it's about!

Break before Orange.
Die before Doom.
Brighten your sunlight,
And then leave the room.
Return in the evening,
And hold me real tight
Close me and blow me.
Let’s go fly a kite.
Burning with brightness,
Angry and clear.
Your heart feels so nervous.
Surrender your fear.
Shut down the moon,
And lay down your gun.
Live up the night-time,
The stars and the sun.
Anger can kill you,
But so can a knife.
Be careful at night-time.
Value your life.

The Curse of the Verse

Random poem of the day.

I must admit
I have the curse
Of wanting to talk
In eternal verse
I spend a vast amount of time
Searching for
The appropriate rhyme
At least it gives me
Something to say
Something to do
On a rainy day
When all outside
Is depressing and blue
At least I can’t say
I have nothing to do
It's something to stop
Life becoming mundane
Something to keep
Me from going insane.
Uh-oh.
Too late.

Low

I sit at my desk.
My life: a period of false recognition
a vision of books and hard labour
a false pretence.
Lies penetrate deep and blend within the darkness.
And far below
a creature lurks
ready to pierce rationalisation when the call sounds
and when the light is low.

I used to love you

Here's a little love poem for Valentine's Day.

I used to love you madly
I used to want you by my side
My world revolved around you
But my time I had to bide

And now that we’re together
The fire that you lit
Is burning ever brighter
Because nothing’s changed a bit.

The birthday warning

Here's a silly poem written for a pal's birthday card many, many, many years ago...

Today's your 18th birthday
A very special day!
I wish you all the very best,
But first I have to say

That here's a birthday warning
A caution you must heed!
This lecture may sound boring,
But I really feel the need

To tell you, first and foremost,
About the demon drink
It sugars-up the brain machine
It muddles how you think

Your mind feels light and happy
But your thoughts are in a mess
You might attempt to do a back-flip
With no chance of success

Sober the next morning,
You stagger out of bed
It feels like someone took a brick
And dropped it on your head

You lurch towards the mirror
And stare in utter shock
Your hair's a mess, your eyes are red
Your nose has run amok

Your stomach feels so queasy
And there's a cut upon your chin
Your room's a mess and, worst of all,
You've thrown up in your bin

And so, for all these reasons
I beg you to beware
Have lots of fun, and party hard
But for goodness sake, take care!
